Newborn Session Shot List & Timing Guide
Newborn sessions run on the baby's schedule, not yours — so the plan is less a minute-by-minute timeline and more a flexible shot list you work through between feeds and naps. Patience and warmth do more than speed.
When to schedule
The classic window is the first two weeks, when newborns sleep deeply and curl naturally. After that, sessions still work beautifully — they just lean more lifestyle and awake. Always let the parents pick a time around a predictable feed.
How long it takes
Budget 2 to 3 hours. Most of that is feeding, soothing, and waiting for the baby to settle. The actual shooting is a small fraction — never rush it.
The shot list
Baby, posed & safe
- Sleeping on a neutral backdrop or wrap
- Close-ups of hands, feet, eyelashes, and lips
- A wide frame showing how tiny they are in the space
- Any spotter-assisted poses done safely (never composite-dependent without a spotter)
Lifestyle & awake
- Baby in the nursery or crib in natural light
- Yawns, stretches, and open-eyed moments
Family & details
- Each parent holding baby; both parents together
- Siblings meeting or holding the baby (with support)
- Keepsake details — name sign, knit items, hospital bracelet
Plan newborn, family, and maternity sessions alongside your wedding work.

- Keep the room warm — newborns settle better and stay asleep.
- Always keep a hand or spotter on the baby; safety beats any single shot.
- Build in extra time so nothing feels rushed for the parents.
